You have probably figured out by now that I am pretty much “stuck” in my low-tech way of doing things.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate or have some rudimentary understanding of all of the wonderful tracking systems available to us in the myriad of programs that can be placed on electronic devices. It’s just that all of my manual, antiquated systems seem to still work pretty well. Others may claim they are not especially efficient, but I understand them. When I follow the rules that I established for them, the systems continue to work well.
My intent here is not necessarily to try to convert you to my way of doing things. The point is that there are many things that, as a solopreneur, you should track. And since tracking those things is vital to maintaining a profitable business, you have to be diligent and thorough in your tracking and follow-up. Now, not all of my reminders to follow-up are done with yellow stickies, but they do make up a key part of my system.
So, why do I like yellow stickies? Well, they are so handy and versatile.
I particularly use them as reminders in my desk calendar. Toward the end of the year I purchase a model E717-50 made for the “At-A-Glance” Desk Calendar.
When I have a follow-up task to perform, I write it on one of those handy little 1½” squares and insert it on the due date in my desk calendar. When that sticky appears as I flip the calendar page, I take the appropriate action that was written on that sticky.
The real beauty of the system is that, since things seldom work out as scheduled, it is easy to move the sticky to the next due date. I never have to remember anything except to turn the calendar page!
Stay tuned for more details illustrating this system in action.
In the meantime, how do you track and follow-up the essential operations for running your business?
